This is a book of short stories that span 65 years of a sharecropper’s daughter’s life. Mary Hammond was born in South Carolina, near Charleston in the mid 1930s. There were three girls in the family. Since her father’s motto was, “Use what you have in your hand,” he farmed the land with the help of his wife and three daughters. Mary found she did not like living on the farm because, no matter the time, during daylight hours, there was always work to be done.As Mary grew up, she decided she would much rather be a shareholder than a sharecropper. This meant leaving home for a new lifestyle and hopefully some adventures. Her new lifestyle proved to be all she expected but in later years, she realized her earlier years on the farm played an intricate part in whom she had become. Therefore, she found herself taking, A Backward Glance.
